How Does Studying Online Work?

A student studies at an online university in almost the same way as a student does in a traditional college. You send an application for admission, register in a degree program, attend the required online courses with at least passing grades, accumulate the number of credits needed for your program and get a degree upon graduation.

Admissions

Every degree program at an online college has a set of requirements a student must satisfy prior to enrolment in a school. For example – the University of Phoenix – has a website listing the requirements for associate and bachelor's degree programs. The website says that applicants should have their high school diploma or GED, be employed or have access to a work environment, be a U.S. citizen or have a valid visa and have good standardized test scores. Other colleges also conduct interviews of applicants to determine their educational needs and goals.

Choose and Complete a Program

After you are admitted, you need to choose a degree program to pursue. There are online programs in business administration, criminal justice, education, healthcare management, information technology, marketing and visual communication. Many online schools are adding more offerings, so be sure to look for quality online schools to see what programs are offered.

You then meet an advisor who will help you with which classes you should take each semester, quarter or module to finish the program on schedule. You get a username and password to log in to the software program that houses their courses. You can access this program anywhere that has a good internet connection. This will let you get your assignments done and chat or email your professors and fellow students.

Receiving Your Degree

When you complete all the requirements for graduation, you will be given your diploma from your online university. Some online colleges even hold virtual or real-life commencement ceremonies. Some colleges that are both online and campus-based have both online and traditional students to attend commencement together.
