Largely because of the weak US economy, many students are opting to pursue their degrees online to enhance their chances in the job market. Most online universities allow the flexibility to go on working full-time and to save on gas. And as online degree programs expand, employers are beginning to look more positively at online degrees.

Degrees from online universities are gaining acceptance with employers and with society in general. Hiring managers are getting themselves familiar with the validity of online degrees because they now show up on more and more job applications. This makes accreditation of online universities important. Without accreditation, an employer cannot be sure if an online degree did not just come from a diploma mill that gives out worthless diplomas to people who can pay for them.

Online degree-holders should know how to sell their degrees. They should use their particular mode of education to their advantage in interviews. Recruiters' ears perk up when they know that a job candidate was able to balance both going to college and working at the same time successfully. This means that the candidate has the ability to be dedicated to a job and accomplish a personal goal.

Still, you need to explain how online universities work to those who will be interviewing you for positions. Talk to them about your university's accreditation and how the course work you completed was neither lighter nor less rigorous because it was completed online. Make them understand that online universities are accredited in the same way that traditional universities are.

How Does Studying Online Work?

A student studies at an online university in almost the same way as a student does in a traditional college. You send an application for admission, register in a degree program, attend the required online courses with at least passing grades, accumulate the number of credits needed for your program and get a degree upon graduation.

Admissions

Every degree program at an online college has a set of requirements a student must satisfy prior to enrolment in a school. For example - the University of Phoenix - has a website listing the requirements for associate and bachelor's degree programs. The website says that applicants should have their high school diploma or GED, be employed or have access to a work environment, be a U.S. citizen or have a valid visa and have good standardized test scores. Other colleges also conduct interviews of applicants to determine their educational needs and goals.

Choose and Complete a Program

After you are admitted, you need to choose a degree program to pursue. There are online programs in business administration, criminal justice, education, healthcare management, information technology, marketing and visual communication. Many online schools are adding more offerings, so be sure to look for quality online schools to see what programs are offered.

You then meet an advisor who will help you with which classes you should take each semester, quarter or module to finish the program on schedule. You get a username and password to log in to the software program that houses their courses. You can access this program anywhere that has a good internet connection. This will let you get your assignments done and chat or email your professors and fellow students.

Receiving Your Degree

When you complete all the requirements for graduation, you will be given your diploma from your online university. Some online colleges even hold virtual or real-life commencement ceremonies. Some colleges that are both online and campus-based have both online and traditional students to attend commencement together.

How To Choose An Online University

The increasing number of online universities is making choosing the right one difficult. It helps that there are more choices but that means you need to plan a strategy separating the good online universities from the bad.

Here are three useful criteria to help you narrow down a list of online universities to the best choices:

Accreditation

The best online universities have been given accreditation from an independent organization. Check if a school is included in the U.S. Department of Education's list of accredited institutions. This should give a physical address for the school, and you can also check for accredited schools in your state. If an online university claims to be certified by a certain organization, you can verify it with the "Search by Accrediting Body" tab. Or you can check with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Reviews

The online university you choose must also meet your own educational needs. Look for reviews prepared by good online education websites. This way, you don't have to go to each online school's website to get information you actually want to see. You can check collegedegrees.com. It contains lots of reviews of online universities that include the school's history, degree levels offered, and the software program used for online classes. This allows you to skip schools that don't offer the degree program you want or that aren't suited for working students.

Rankings

Check the university's rankings. Rankings of online universities are given in the web site of the Online Education Database (OEDb). The site lists and explains all the criteria used to determine how the schools get ranked. The better an online university is ranked, the better your overall experience will likely be at that university.

Online Universities vs. Traditional Universities

Online Universities vs. Traditional Universities

The main distinctions between online universities and traditional universities involve where and how instruction is delivered.

Online universities give students the chance to take their courses from anywhere, as long as they have access to the Internet. The traditional university uses only one location. Professors at online universities use many multimedia resources to teach their students. Online professors use software designed for online learning to give links to study materials, supplement learning using streaming audio/video, host Web conferences with multiple students or communicate via e-mail and chat.

At a traditional university, students go to a class on campus in a classroom with a professor physically present. The professors may use multimedia resources like PowerPoint and supply online materials using programs like Blackboard, the focus is on what goes inside classroom. Students may even get penalties for not coming to class, and schedules are more rigid than online universities.

Traditional classes suit working adults with full-time jobs. There may be night classes for students who work during the daytime, but these options are usually limited. Some students may have to attend school part time if only taking night classes, and this limits their access to get financial aid or some grants. Online universities make it a point to give options for those who need to work full-time and attend school full-time.

Increased flexibility for students is another difference. The classes offered by online universities require that students log in a specific number of times each week, but often they do not have to be at a specific time. Online professors can allow students submit work or take tests over the weekend. With traditional universities, missing a set test day or other due day means a lower grade.

With online courses, physical meetings with professors or other students may not happen. However, in-person social interaction is important in a traditional college experience. Students at online universities learn at home. There is usually no one to consult with. Students at online universities have to work independently, although they may communicate tough questions to professors or fellow students by e-mail or chat.
